Surf Payroll allows you to set up various Benefits in Kind (BIK) or notional pay for employees under various pre-configured headings such as accommodation, loan and vehicle.
To set up the BIK, you need to first move to the employee benefits page. However, after you log in to Surf Payroll, there can be the following scenarios:
- The logged-in account has a single Business
- The logged-in account has multiple Businesses.
The steps to move to the employee benefits page are different in each of the above scenarios. The steps are provided below scenario-wise.
If your business has payrolls not submitted prior the current date, Surf Payroll displays a message recommending you submit them soon.

- Log in to Surf Payroll.
- The Dashboard page appears. On the left panel, click Employee>Benefit in Kind.
- Log in to Surf Payroll and find the required Business record.
- On the Business page, under the Select a Business heading, click the required Business name. You can also sort the records in ascending or descending order. To sort, click the column.
- The Employees page appears. On the Employees page, click Employees>Benefit in Kind.
Now that you are on the employee benefits page, complete the following steps.
- On the Employee Benefits page, select the required employee and click Add Benefit.
- Select the required BIK item from the list.
TYPES OF BENEFIT
This list provides all the pre-configured heads under which you can set up the BIK. Select the required head and then enter the information accordingly, as given below.
Accommodation
- DESCRIPTION: Brief BIK description. For example, Company Accommodation.
- BENEFIT SUB-TYPE (€): Select Property Value or Rent Value and then enter the monetary value.
- VALUE OF ANY FURNITURE PROVIDED (€): The total monetary value of all the furniture in the accommodation.
- START DATE: Benefit commencement date. The BIK is applicable to the payroll in the period immediately after the start date.
- END DATE: Benefit end date, if applicable. The BIK is removed from the payroll in the period immediately after the end date.
- EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTION (€): Employee contribution towards the benefit, if applicable. The employee contribution is based on the custom frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then employee contribution is calculated monthly.
- DESCRIPTION:Brief BIK description. For example, personal loan.
- TYPE: Select Qualifying Home Loan or Other Loan.
- LOAN AMOUNT (€): Loan amount.
- RATE OF INTEREST (%): Chargeable interest rate.
- START DATE: Benefit commencement date. The BIK is applicable to the payroll in the period immediately after the start date.
- END DATE: Benefit end date, if applicable. The BIK is removed from the payroll in the period immediately after the end date.
- DESCRIPTION: Brief BIK description. For example, company car.
- TYPE: Select Car or Van to indicate the type of vehicle given as a benefit.
- ORIGINAL MARKET VALUE (€): Original market value.
- CARBON CLASS: Select an appropriate option.
- REDUCTION: Select, if applicable.
- START DATE: Benefit commencement date. The BIK is applicable to the payroll in the period immediately after the start date.
- END DATE: Benefit end date, if applicable. The BIK is removed from the payroll in the period immediately after the end date.
- KM : Distance the car covers during a specified duration. The duration is calculated based on the custom payroll frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then the distance is calculated monthly.
- EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTION (€): Employee contribution towards the benefit, if applicable. The employee contribution is based on the custom frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then employee contribution is calculated monthly.
- DESCRIPTION: Brief BIK description. For example, Family Holiday Voucher.
- BENEFIT SUB-TYPE: Appropriate option, for example, Other.
- VALUE (€): Monetary value of the benefit sub-type.
- DATE: Date the BIK was provided. The BIK is applicable to payroll for just one payroll period.
- EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTION (€): Employee contribution towards the benefit, if applicable. The employee contribution is based on the custom frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then employee contribution is calculated monthly.
- DESCRIPTION: Brief BIK description. For example, dependent’s medical insurance.
- BENEFIT SUB-TYPE: Appropriate option, for example, Medical.
- VALUE (€): Monetary value of the benefit sub-type.
- START DATE: Benefit commencement date. The BIK is applicable to the payroll in the period immediately after the start date.
- END DATE: Benefit end date, if applicable. The BIK is removed from the payroll in the period immediately after the end date.
- EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTION (€): Employee contribution towards the benefit, if applicable. The employee contribution is based on the custom frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then employee contribution is calculated monthly.
Note: You can edit the variable values on the Payroll Details page of the employee.
- DESCRIPTION: Brief BIK description. For example, a dependent’s medical insurance.
- To enable the variable benefit, select the Active check box.
- BENEFIT SUB-TYPE: Appropriate option, for example, Medical Insurance.
- VALUE (€): Monetary value of the benefit sub-type.
- START DATE: Benefit commencement date. The BIK is applicable to the payroll in the period immediately after the start date.
- END DATE: Benefit end date, if applicable. The BIK is removed from the payroll in the period immediately after the end date.
- EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTION (€): Employee contribution towards the benefit, if applicable. The employee contribution is based on the custom frequency. For example, if the custom frequency is monthly, then employee contribution is calculated monthly.
- To save the benefit settings, click Save. The benefit settings are saved.
- The benefit-in-kind settings are available on the Employee Benefits page.
